Bed plays an important role in the life of any person. It is necessary to approach the choice of a design with all responsibility. A comfortable bed is the key to a good sleep, a reliable support for the spine and a guarantee of good health. Today there are many design options, the cost of which depends on the type, shape and material of the product. If you want to save, you can make a bed with your own hands.
Bed design: the components of the bed
The main elements of the bed of any type are the frame and base. The design has two side panels and two supporting walls or two lateral sides and one supporting. The bed does not have to be equipped with side elements, it can stand on four legs, the height of which varies from 20 cm.
If the product rests on the side walls, there are usually drawers for storing clothes under the mattress. They can be put forward at the side of the structure, or the place for storage opens when the mattress is raised from the footboard. Such a mechanism is called gas lift.
The frame of the bed is represented by a box consisting of two supporting backs with hollows or four supporting side panels with hinged backs. In the case of the second option in the design includes wooden or metal legs.
The framework is attached to the base, which is the support for the mattress. The element can be made in the form of a spring structure, metal mesh, rail rolling or fixed base. The most popular is the slatted bottom of the bed in the form of slats, which are characterized by durability, reliability, convenience and durability. They are made of birch or beech.
Important! The more lamellae the bed base is equipped with, the stronger and more durable the design.
The headboard is a decorative element. It can be flat, curved, solid, openwork, woven, lattice, vertical, sloping, upholstered in fabric or leather, decorated with carvings or paintings, which show photos of the beds with their hands from wood. The presence of the foot is determined by the model of the bed. Many prefer products without this element, which does not create a barrier to the legs, which is especially important for a tall person.
The bed frame can be made of wood, metal, MDF, chipboard or rattan. The tree is still the most popular. This is due to its high technical and operational characteristics. The material is durable, eco-friendly and durable. Wooden products have a presentable and luxurious appearance.
Elite expensive products are made of red or teak wood. The more affordable beds are made from solid beech, oak, ash, pine, cherry, alder or birch. The specific type of wood determines the cost of construction. The bed of logs looks unusual and original.
Chipboard or MDF is also often used for the production of beds. This is due to the affordable cost of material in comparison with the price of solid wood. Plates of pressed wood have a rich color palette. The surface can be monophonic or imitating wooden shades. The disadvantage of the material is some toxicity, which occurs due to the presence of formaldehydes in the composition of the products. There are also options for beds made of plywood, characterized by strength and durability.
Firmly settled in modern metal bed interiors. The material has high strength, wear resistance and durability. Metal constructions are made under gilding or silver, imitate the look of an aged product, they can be covered with leather or fabric. Such designs ideally fit into the rooms decorated in the style of country, modern or high-tech.
What are the sizes of beds 2-bedroom, single and one and a half
The dimensions of the bed, which are indicated on the drawings of the beds, are selected based on the parameters of the person, the size of the room, the number of people who will sleep on it, and the specific habits of the owners. There are also two ways to measure the dimensions of a structure. In Europe, the metric system is used, i.e. the size of the product is indicated in meters. In the USA, UK and Australia, the basic unit of measurement is foot.
Important! The dimensions of the bed and the mattress must be calculated in the same measurement system, as the meters may not correspond to the feet.
The length of a berth should be selected taking into account the height of a person with a margin of at least 20 cm. The standard size of the product is in the range of 180-200 cm.
The width is selected based on the body of a person and the number of people sleeping on the bed. Depending on this criterion, the products can be single, double, one-and-a-half and children’s.
The single design is characterized by a standard width of 100-150 cm. One-and-a-half products are chosen by those who love open space. Such designs will have a width of 120-160 cm. European manufacturers produce products with sizes up to 140 cm, and American – 120-137 cm.
The double bed has a width of 160 cm, which will be enough for a comfortable arrangement of two people of medium build on it. For thin owners of a sleeping bed, there are models characterized by a parameter of 140 cm. Fans are recommended to use a bed having a width of up to 200 cm during sleep.
The height of the bed can vary from 20 to 90 cm, depending on the type of construction. Low products are available in heights of 20–30 cm, standard ones are 40–60 cm, and tall ones are 70–90 cm. The latter design is often installed in small rooms where it is important to use each centimeter of space efficiently. Here you can equip a spacious storage system in the under-bed area.
The bed can have not only rectangular, but also round shape. The standard size of this product is 220 cm in diameter.
Making a single bed with your own hands at home begins with determining its dimensions. Most often, the design has a width of 80-100 cm and a length of 200 cm. For the manufacture of the framework, boards of 25×4 cm are used. For sidewalls, take elements of a length of 200 cm and 100 cm for the ends.
How to make a bed of wood with your own hands? The constituent elements of the structure can be connected in several ways. The easiest method is to fix the boards with self-tapping screws. To create a more durable construction should use metal corners.
The second option involves the connection of elements using eyelets and wooden spikes. Nests are performed with a jigsaw or chisel. They should have a depth of 5 cm and a width of 2-3 cm. Prepared compounds are lubricated with glue and collected.
Important! The angles of the slots should be aligned to 90 degrees.
The next step in the manufacture of a single bed with your own hands is the installation of slats. To do this, supporting bars are attached to the longitudinal beams of the structure, which must withstand the weight of a person. They are made of square wooden blocks of 4×4 cm in size and are mounted on the inside of the sidewalls with self-tapping screws. Next to these strips parallel to each other at the same distance fixed slats with metal corners.
Helpful advice! As a base for a mattress, you can use a sheet of plywood or thick boards.
Next is made headboard and foot of the bed. To do this, use the furniture board, chipboard, MDF. Products may have different configurations and heights. The final stage is the installation of the legs for the bed. They are usually made of logs or bars. Products may be a continuation of the vertical racks of the headboard and foot of the bed. Their optimum height is 25 cm. They are fastened with metal corners and screws.
Before you assemble a double bed, you should measure the dimensions of the mattress. In this case, an element with a size of 160×200 cm is taken as the basis. For the manufacture of the construction, such materials will be needed:
- timber section of 50×50 mm – for the frame and the legs of the bed;
- boards of 30х30 mm – for support beams under the rack base;
- metal corner, having a shelf width of 50 mm;
- self-tapping screws 40-65 mm long.
First of all, a frame for the mattress is assembled, which assumes an internal size of 170×210 cm and a height of 20 cm. On each side, four beams are glued together, which are clamped together with clamps. You should get two blanks 180 cm long and two – 220 cm. They are interconnected into a lock. To do this, use a jigsaw in the middle to cut out a notch with a length of 5 cm on short elements. On long blanks are spikes. To do this, saw off on both sides by 5 cm of timber.
Formed grooves and spikes are coated with glue and joined at a right angle. In the middle part of the frame with a metal angle fixed longitudinal lintel with additional support. At the corners of the frame, legs are attached from a timber with a height of 40 cm, glue and self-tapping screws are used for this purpose.
For reliability, legs can be made of thicker timber. To give them a graceful shape, it is necessary to taper the chamfer on the inside at an angle of 45 degrees. For mounting the legs should be used long bolts with heads and flat washers.
Helpful advice! To prevent deformation of the structure, it is recommended to arrange triangular inserts at the bottom of each corner.
Along the long frame elements on the inside, beams are attached under the rack base. Their top face (it can be clearly seen on the drawing of a double bed) is located in the same plane with the upper border of the lintel. Rails of 170 cm length are made of 20×100 mm planks. They must be laid and fastened across lintels and longitudinal support beams with a step of 3 cm. The first and last elements should be tightly attached to the front and rear walls of the bed frame.
Helpful advice! To avoid creaking of the rails, the elements should be made 1 cm shorter than the frame of the frame.
After assembly, the frame should be sanded using a medium-grained emery paper. A stain is applied to the surface, after drying of which, the frame is varnished in several layers.
Important! The transformation mechanism is set in such a way that a 10 mm gap remains between the seat and the backrest of the unfolded design. It should be borne in mind that in a folded sofa, the seat should not protrude beyond the armrests.
After the bed is assembled, its bedding is performed. Non-woven fabric is nailed onto the lamellae, on top of which foam rubber 60 mm thick is laid. At the edge of the seat is glued another strip of material. Next, the entire surface is covered with a second layer of foam rubber, bending its edges under the seat. The same procedure is performed with the back of the sofa. Removable covers are sewn on structural elements.
With minimal skills, you can make the most bed of any type. The main thing is to make a drawing of the future construction correctly, to prepare the necessary material and, following the instructions, to assemble it.
