Arrangement of a personal plot is carried out by various methods: canopies and arbors are installed, paths are laid, flower beds and flower beds are broken. The final nuance is garden furniture. For arranging a small recreation area, a garden bench with a back can be used with your own hands: you can find drawings and diagrams of beautiful structures, as well as recommendations for creating them in this article.
Types of designs and photos of garden benches
The modern range of furniture for the garden is quite extensive. Classification of products is carried out on the basis of such signs:
Functional features of furniture are valued on a par with their practicality and durability. All products are divided into two large groups:
- benches used exclusively for seating;
- multifunctional benches (the product can perform several functions – to be a bench, a rocking chair or a table).
Helpful advice! Use the unusual design of the transformer bench to save space in the garden. It can easily be converted into a table for writing or eating in the fresh air.
Many owners of homestead plots install benches and swings. For their creation materials of different types are used, and the structures themselves can be given an interesting shape. To make such a bench convenient to use, it is imperative to build a canopy on top of it. It will provide protection from the sun and rain.
Popular for making their own hands bench with a back, having a stationary type of accommodation. Most often they are made of concrete or brick, and a special place is selected for installation. Such products are not afraid of the influence of the sun and moisture.
There are benches folding type with small dimensions and mobile design. They are useful if the suburban area is rarely used. At the time of absence of the owners of folding benches are cleaned in the garage for storage or in the house.
Metal products have the highest strength characteristics. They are reliable, durable and can be used throughout the year. Metal structures are unpretentious in terms of care. It is enough to periodically cover their surface with an anti-corrosion agent that will protect the benches from the damaging effects of moisture.
A bench made entirely of metal will have a very massive appearance, so modern designs are made using forged patterns. It should be remembered that for this you need to get a welding machine.
Most of the owners of suburban areas, the decision to make a bench to give their own hands, prefer wood. This material becomes the basis for the creation of shops with a beautiful design, excellent performance and a warm texture. Regardless of the design of the garden or courtyard, wooden products can always be harmoniously entered into the landscape.
Helpful advice! Take for work oak or larch.
In order to protect the surface of the product must be coated with a varnish or paint. This will prevent the damage to wood caused by insects, fungi, mold, as well as moisture and sun. Using a lacquer composition as a finishing finish will help to preserve the natural design of the tree.
If you prefer practical options of benches, you should pay attention to the products made of stone. This type of material is characterized by low cost and long service life, and the structures are durable, reliable and aesthetically attractive.
Stone belongs to the category of materials of natural origin. Despite this, the design of such shops will not always be able to support any design and style of the garden. At the site must be present stone elements as a supplement. Especially profitable shops look on the background of a residential building, partly made of stone.
A good ensemble will make stone:
- flower beds.
Stone can be made partially or fully supports fences, gazebos and sheds. If at the site there is at least one of these elements, stone shops will always come to the place. However, it should be remembered that such products do not have a back.
Plastic products have a number of advantages, which include:
- the simplicity and low weight of the structure, due to which the transportation of material does not cause difficulties, and the bench itself can be moved from one place to another;
- an extensive choice of colors, which allows you to make a product that will later fit well into the design of the garden;
- practicality (folding-type designs are easily disassembled and placed in the trunk and are also easy to assemble on site).
Helpful advice! Use do-it-yourself garden bench drawings to create structures made of composite materials. You will be able to give your product positive performance characteristics that are inherent in each type of raw materials used.
Combined combinations of different texture, texture, color and origin of materials are used not only for decorative purposes. The most common option is a combination of stone and wood.
The designs made of wood and complemented with stone or metal elements look original. In such projects, wood creates a soft and beautiful texture, and stone and metal are responsible for strength.
The designs of benches and benches have some distinctive features. The construction of the bench is the simplest way to organize a sitting place in the garden. The product has no back and, unlike the bench, has a simple external performance.
Self-made wooden bench with a back can have a more complex decorative design:
- non-standard form;
- design, decorated with carved and wrought elements.
To revive the construction of a simple shop, it is not necessary to invent a complex drawing and puzzle over the creation of additional accessories for the garden. It is enough to use two wooden boxes and several boards.
The boxes in this case will function as supports. After the shop has been made, it is possible to fill them with earth and organize a small flower bed. A seat is made from the boards, which is installed between the drawers. The material must be properly sanded using sandpaper, remove all irregularities and burrs.
Helpful advice! From the benches on the basis of boxes, you can make a garden bench with a back with your own hands. It is enough to install the structure against the wall and on its plane to nail in the required place a few boards as a back.
Wood constructions have a certain disadvantage. The material itself requires constant care, and in this case the tree also comes into contact with the soil, it is necessary to periodically water the plants. To make the shop more practical, wooden boxes can be replaced with concrete or stone pedestals. Beds of concrete can be made independently or purchased in the store.
For the seat, use treated boards or half-round logs. The choice of raw materials depends on the style in which the design of the garden or courtyard. It is recommended to fasten the seat with metal corners fixed to the concrete using dowels, and to the wood with through bolts or self-tapping screws.
As a support, you can use vases with dwarf trees or ornamental shrubs. The only, but very important requirement – the capacity must be very durable. In the seat is cut a hole in the shape of the pot in the place where the legs are usually benches. The size of the hole should be sufficient to create conditions for the growth of the plant and care for it, however, it should not exceed the size of the container. In fact, the seat of the boards is placed on top of the flowerpots and is fixed by gravity and weight of the seated.
Ethno and rustic style directions of design are often used in interior design. Country house, cottage or cottage – a great place to create an eco-friendly and natural corner, suitable for family holidays. This design can be continued in the garden. To do this, it is enough to make a bench with a back with your own hands from logs (Fig. 1) and other natural materials.
Helpful advice! For the construction of the structure, you can use logs with or without bark. To process the material or leave it in its original form depends on your wishes and the design of the site.
To form a seat, it is enough to saw a tree trunk along. This can be done exactly in the middle (in the diameter zone) or by shifting the saw closer to the edge (in the medium diameter zone). The backrest is made of a tree trunk with a smaller thickness, or you can cut closer to the edge. As a result, this element should be thinner and lighter than the seat part.
The legs can be made from the remnants of the log. They are connected to the seat part with metal pins. This is done like this:
- In the parts that need to be connected, pin holes are made in the appropriate places. The diameter of the holes should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the fastener.
- The pin is hammered into one of the holes approximately in the middle of its length.
- A second part to be joined is pushed over the free edge of the pin and is also clogged. In this case, the blows fall not on the pin, but on the wood.
Fasteners hammered with a sledgehammer or hammer. Since wood is a fairly soft material in its structure, hammer blows can damage its surface. To avoid this, you need to put an unnecessary board under the tool.
Studs provide a reliable connection of all parts. To strengthen the fixation, you can install 2-3 pins.
In the style of ethno, you can create a design with a non-standard execution. The highlight may be, for example, the manufacture of the bench with the use of curved branches of different diameters. Before assembling the product, these branches are processed and sanded. In other words, bark is removed from them, and then the surface is polished with sandpaper. Unedged board must be used for seat assembly. It is processed in the same way.
Note! All elements of this design have rounded shapes, and the seat boards are facing forward.
If your summer cottage has a wicker fence, you can use the same design option with some modifications. Short seat boards can be replaced by long ones, arranging them along. The back is formed on the principle of weaving from branches of medium thickness, which bend well.
To complete the braided back, it is not necessary to have any special skills. You may not get a very accurate result, but this is not necessary. The back should be simple and unobtrusive, rough weaving will only increase its decorative properties. The branches can be positioned tightly or, on the contrary, leave gaps between them so that your bench can “breathe”.
Despite the absence of a back, this scheme (Fig. 3-1) of the manufacture of the bench looks quite attractive due to the characteristics of the material from which it will be made. By itself, the design has a very simple structure, so everyone will cope with the technology of its creation.
For the legs will need a rounded timber. If you have logs with a small diameter, you can save on the purchase of material and trim them yourself. The original appearance of the shop is obtained due to the fact that the bars are stacked on top of one another and fixed. The result is a beautiful support for the product.
Bench height can be adjusted to suit your needs. This indicator also depends on the diameter of the timber to be used in the work. To calculate the amount of material, you need to determine how many bars will be stacked on top of one another to form the required height of one of the legs.
|Item Parameter||Indicator, see|
|Seat board (cross section)||4×9|
In our case, 5 bars will be required, the length of which is 0.45 m. The calculation formula is 5×0.45 = 2.25 m. On this basis, 4.5 m of beam (2.25×2) is required for the construction of two pillars. The seat will consist of five planks 1.2 m long. To make it, you will need the following amount of material: 5×1.2 = 6 m.
Helpful advice! For rounding the edges of the timber, you can use a milling cutter or purchase ready-made profiled material. Its cost is higher, but in the work of profiled timber is much more convenient.
To start preparing the board for the seat. The material is cut into the required number of boards of the appropriate length and processed. Sharp angles should be rounded. Take advantage of the possibilities of the router or grinder. If you do not have such a tool at hand, it will be enough to process the edges with sandpaper.
Sanding with sandpaper is a long and laborious process. To simplify your work, you can order the grinding of the material at the sawmill. After the boards are prepared, they need to be opened with a varnishing compound. This can be a completely transparent lacquer or a composition with a touch (the choice of finishing coating depends only on you).
Bars, designed to form the legs of the bench, tightly stacked next to each other so that their edges form a flat line. Using a pencil and a square, apply the markup in those areas where the fasteners will be installed. The lines should be distributed over the entire length in increments of 7-10 cm.
Metal pins will be used as fasteners. An alternative substitute for them can be dowels made of wood. For mounting fasteners holes are made, the diameter of which is slightly less than the diameter of the pins, and the depth is half the length of the pin.
To fix the parts, the fasteners will be hammered into one of the bars, and the next element will be mounted through the hole on top of it.
Helpful advice! Assembling the structure with pins is a reliable method of fastening. To increase the strength of fixation, you can use the adhesive composition during installation, but this technique will make the design non-separable.
The pin joint is also used in the process of creating, according to drawings, benches for giving with own hands from wood, the design of which is equipped with a back. Qualitative results can be achieved only if all the holes are located strictly one above the other. As a result, all the parts during assembly should form a flat edge line.
After drawing the marking lines, you need to measure the distance from the edge, which should be the same. For these purposes, it is recommended to create a template. It is enough to take a piece of the plank, the width of which is 1.5 cm. It will serve as a kind of limiter. In other words, the holes from the edge will be separated by a distance equal to the width of this bar. Attach the template exactly along the edge line and mark the intersection points with the existing perpendicular marking.
Upon completion of all the work you need to check the design for performance. Install the backrest in an inclined position and fasten it with bolts. Remove the fastener from the hole and move the backrest to a horizontal position. To fix it, put the bolt in its place and secure with a nut. The design is completely ready for operational use.
When creating benches you can experiment. The main thing is that the product turned out to be durable and practical.
