Oriented strand boards tightly entered modern construction, replacing the once popular chipboard panels. The multi-layer structure, combined with the high quality of the wood used, gives this material excellent technical characteristics. OSP slabs: what it is and what they are
In order to properly and effectively use such panels in our work, one needs to know that the OSB board is a building material that consists of elements of wood, so-called large-sized chips. These particles are interconnected by exposure to high temperature and pressure, as well as a water-resistant resin.
Such plates differ from chipboard mainly in the arrangement of chips in layers: the transverse direction is characteristic of the inside of the plate, while longitudinally shavings are placed outside. So, at the expense of several layers (most often three, sometimes four) and alternation of the directions of the location of the chips, a durable and reliable building material is obtained.
As a basis for the manufacture of such plates, use chips from 7.5 to 15 cm in length. The width and thickness of the chips should also be within the normal range – 1-1.2 cm and 0.5-0.8 mm, respectively. Elements of smaller size for the production of OSB are not used, they are shipped for the manufacture of chipboard.
Depending on the thickness and weight of the OSB of the plate, all products are divided by manufacturers into three main classes:
- OSB 1 is the easiest and simplest version of the plate. Its use is limited to simple work that does not involve too serious load on the surface. In addition, the material does not tolerate increased humidity;
- OSB 2 is a more durable option, the use of which is permissible even when installing load-bearing structures. However, this material also reacts negatively to moisture;
- GSP 3 is the most expensive, but also the best option. This class of plates is not afraid of any serious load or high humidity. Operation of this building material is permissible even in the most severe conditions.
In order to better understand the intricacies of use and the characteristics of PCBs, it is necessary to know how and from what they are obtained. Consider a brief manufacturing technology of this material.
The first stage is the selection of suitable wood. Trunks of small non-commercial wood are pre-selected and cut into small pieces that serve as blanks. Then a special machine shreds them, turning them into strapping tape. Depending on the needs of production, you can set a different size of chips, which is obtained at the output. After drying, the material enters the machine, where the separation of small chips from large ones occurs.
After the chips of the required size are sorted, connecting elements are added to them for mixing. Most often, these are phenolic or isocyanate substances, which give the future slab internal strength and moisture resistance. The resulting mixture is mixed with paraffin and resin in a special drum.
The formation of the plate itself begins with the process of laying chips in layers along and across. For this, a special machine equipped with scales and magnets is used.
When the potential plate has gained its shape, the pressing process is carried out, applying pressure of 5 N / mm ?. Increased temperature and pressure provide a strong adhesion of elements, forming a single solid plate, which after cooling is cut into products of the desired size.
Due to its characteristics and affordable price, chipboard OSB are widely used in many areas. Here are just a few of the most basic uses for this material:
- installation of OSB of plates on walls (both from external, and from the inside);
- laying floors of OSB boards;
- the construction of both temporary and permanent partitions;
- the creation of structural elements in low-rise construction;
- the creation of a continuous crates for the further installation of the roofing material.
Technical characteristics of OSB of plates will pleasantly surprise even the most experienced builder. Below we consider what the main properties of this material make it so attractive.
Ease of processing. Having a standard set of carpentry tools, you can easily work with OSB stove. To give it the desired size and shape, you can cut it, cut, plane or grind. And in order to provide it with a secure mount, you can drill or punch holes in it for fasteners.
High holding capacity. Large elements of chips used in the production process allow nails to be driven into the slab even at the minimum distance from the edge (up to 6 mm) without the risk of chipping. OSB perfectly holds fasteners.

The dimensions of the oriented strand boards can be different, depending on the class of the product and the method of processing its edges. Classical is considered to be products of class OSP 3 with such dimensions:
- 2500×1250 and 2440×1220 mm provided that the edges of the slab are evenly trimmed;
- 2500×1250, 2450×590, 2440×590 and 2440×1220 mm for plates with a tongue.

Based on some experience in the use of OSP plates, the characteristics of this material, as well as feedback, it is possible to draw certain conclusions regarding the pros and cons of this material. Benefits of using PCA:
- the probability of delamination, splitting or the appearance of chips is almost completely absent, due to the homogeneous structure of the plate;
- correctly oriented chips prevent the penetration of moisture, and also allow you to hammer nails into the slab without fear;
- OSB slabs are easy to cut, saw, etc .;

- plates are insensitive to sudden changes in temperature and moderate weight loads;
- structures erected from OSB slabs possess irreplaceable quality – elasticity. This allows them to better tolerate any tremors than, for example, stone structures;

- for all its merits and characteristics, OSB plates retain affordable cost. Depending on the thickness and size, the price of OSB 3 slab can start from 580 rubles per sheet.
It is difficult to note any serious shortcomings of this product. The only thing worth remembering is that working with any wood materials requires protection of the respiratory tract. Resins, which are part of wood dust, are carcinogenic, which are unsafe for human health. Otherwise, it is quite difficult to find cons. Oriented strand boards are called completely environmentally friendly material. However, despite this, you can hear many different opinions, claiming the terrible danger posed by the OSB of the plate. Let’s try to figure out whether these concerns are justified, and whether there is a real threat to health in the case of using these products.
According to the statements of those who believe in the insecurity used for the manufacture of compounds, phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde resins are of synthetic origin. And although it is they who endow the OSB of the plate with all the qualities for which they are so highly valued, with non-compliance with the manufacturing techniques they may be unsafe even after complete solidification.

The dangers posed by the excessive release of carcinogenic impurities such as formaldehyde, phenol, benzene and methanol are very serious. This is fraught with the appearance of allergic skin reactions and the likelihood of developing serious diseases. As a result of exposure to these substances, violations of the cardiovascular system are often noted.
How is this problem solved? In order to minimize the risks of negative effects of substances on the human body, a special classification was developed, which provides for the acceptability of the use of each type of OSB in certain conditions.
In order to ensure that the manufactured products comply with GOST and SNiP, each major manufacturer is obliged to provide their products for sanitary and hygienic examination. Thus, each batch of goods receives its own certificate, which indicates which tests were carried out and how safe these products are for use in residential premises.
The European standard DIN EN120, which was recognized in Russia, provides for the following classification, depending on the amount of formaldehyde contained in the product. Per 100 grams of dry matter:
- E3 – up to 30 mg;
- E2 – 10-20 mg;
- E1 – up to 10 mg;
- E0 – up to 6.5 mg.

- Before picking up the item, inspect the packaging. It must be integral, have labeling and additional leaflets with product information;
- once again make sure that the safety class of the purchased material is not higher than E0 or E1.

As already mentioned, one of the advantages of oriented strand board is an affordable price point. By purchasing OSB, you get the same natural wood, but at a better price.
The first thing that determines the price of OSB is the size of the plate and the manufacturer. Depending on what kind of filler is used in the manufacturing process, the cost will fluctuate.
On average, 1 m? the simplest PCB, manufactured in the EU or the US, will cost you from 180 to 400 rubles. Of course, if you make a wholesale purchase and order several cubic meters of goods at once, you will be given significant discounts. But most often, buyers prefer to purchase sheets of the piece.
For example, the price of OSB slabs for a floor can start from 590 rubles and reach up to 1,430 rubles per piece. The prices of OSB plates for exterior decoration have a slightly smaller range – from the lower limit of 550 to the upper limit of 1051 rubles per piece.

Construction oriented particle boards, like any other material, have their own characteristics and installation requirements. Consider some of them on the example of external cladding of the walls of the house.

Another important point – the arrangement of waterproofing and protection from the wind. To do this, use a special super diffusion membrane, which copes with these functions and at the same time removes moisture from the walls, not allowing condensate to accumulate. Some try to replace it with regular polyethylene to save money. However, the problem is that a simple film does not contribute to the removal of moisture, which over time can lead to processes of rotting material.
Such wide popularity of oriented strand boards is quite explicable, because not so many materials can compete with them, having competed for primacy not only with technical characteristics, but also with a price range.
With regard to the shortcomings associated with the danger of this product to human health, there is only required to devote time to it – once to figure out the issue and pick up an OSP of a safe class. And the rest is very convenient, practical and modern material, which can rightly stand on a par with wood.
